Renewing a US passport for a child may be challenging. The requirements for renewal are detailed for children, because they must do so in person until they reach 16 years of age. Success will most likely depend on how well you understand the rules and follow them.

Travel Documents

All minors regardless of age must have their own documentation if they wish to travel by air outside of the United States. In some cases, children traveling from contiguous areas into the United States may present other forms of identification such as a birth certificate. Be certain to clarify what, if any visas are necessary. With the legal paperwork so crucial for children, it is important to begin the renewal process far in advance of any trip abroad.

Proper Forms

Parents must take their children in person to a designated acceptance facility or agency to apply. Upon arrival, Form DS-11: Application for a U. S. Passport must be completed and signed in view of an Acceptance Agent. This form is absolutely required, but it cannot be filled out or signed in advance because to do so will disqualify it. Parents should be ready to give the agent their Social Security numbers.

DS-11

The Form DS-11 must be submitted in person by the parents together with the child. The Bureau of Consular Affairs is the government agency responsible for dealing with passports. The easiest way to find a designated application facility is to stop at a local post office and ask. Many local post offices do this work on behalf of the Department of State. Other places include public libraries, government offices for townships, counties, or states. Public libraries and clerks of court are also specific entities that may offer this service.

Requirements

The need for unexpected travel is best handled by going directly to a regional agency. If you are already abroad, then make an appointment at the closest United States Embassy or Consulate. There will be no charge for this appointment, but plan on paying an Expedite Fee. You must give a paper copy of your travel itinerary. You must submit Form DS-82, and you must do it in person with any children traveling with you.

Pictures

You must supply a two-inch by two-inch photo of each applicant. Children look very different every few months so current images are required. You can take the photo yourself, but the rules are strict. To avoid problems, it may be best to have a professional do this work for you.

Security

Because international parental child abduction has become a problem worldwide, you can expect that the agencies will be strict about their paperwork requirements. If both parents are not traveling with their offspring, a letter, notarized, and signed by the parent not traveling is required to accompany the application. This is one example of specific details that may be required, and highlights the importance of learning the details.

All of the details must be accounted for when traveling with children. The specific lost expedited passport requirements help to keep families better protected. Being prepared with proper documentation is the best plan when renewing a US pasport for a child. Start long in advance for application success.
